Does a biosphere reserve prohibit all access?
It is a place where nature conservation and sustainable local life are considered together. It is managed through core, buffer, and cooperation zones so that the conservation of important ecosystems can be balanced with research, education, and the local economy.
The roles of the three zones
- Core zone: gives priority to conserving biodiversity and important natural and cultural heritage.
- Buffer zone: supports the core zone through research, education, and ecologically compatible use.
- Cooperation zone: connects residents’ everyday lives with a sustainable local economy.
A biosphere reserve and a global geopark are different
A biosphere reserve focuses on ecosystem conservation, research, education, and sustainable local life. A global geopark focuses on geological heritage of international importance, together with education, conservation, and geotourism. The two designations are connected, but they are not the same accreditation.
